They are the epidermis or outer layer, the dermis or middle layer, and the subcutaneous or under layer.
Stretch marks, referred to in medical terms as striae, occur within the dermis, and are directly caused by stretching skin beyond its elastic capabilities. Due to skin’s inability to adequately produce increased amounts of elastin during periods of rapid growth, intertwining collagen fibers are essentially pulled apart, causing bleeding and scars in the dermis. These become furrows in the outer layer, and appear as dark red or purple stripes running parallel to each other.
However, stretch marks on thighs will eventually fade to a pale, silvery tone and resemble the appearance, if not the texture, of a normal scar. Common Causes of Stretch Marks Stretch marks are not limited to to any one group of people. While they do appear more frequently on women than men, owing in part to pregnancy, men can and do get stretch marks as well. They can develop anywhere on the body, and the thighs are one of the locations on the body where stretch marks tend to appear the most.
Although thigh stretch marks have no effect on physical health, they usually have a negative impact on self-esteem, especially in women.
Rapid increases in size and weight gain are common secondary causes of stretch marks on thighs behind pregnancy. This is typically the case when thigh stretch marks develop in pubescent boys and girls, as well as in those experiencing excessive weight gain. Body builders who lift weights to in order to get dramatic increases in muscle mass can also have problems with stretch marks.
Thigh stretch marks are most unattractive when they first appear. Dark red or purple in color, they differ visibly in thickness and texture. Over time, stretch marks on thighs and elsewhere fade in tone, and appear as delicate furrows within the surface layer of skin. however, the differences in skin thickness and in texture remain, even when this epidermal scarring is invisible to the naked eye.
